Hidetaka Miyazaki talks about Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree and shares exciting details: map, bosses, weapons and more

With the official unveiling of the ELDEN RING: Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, yesterday was an exciting afternoon for fans of FromSoftware’s games and more specifically the latest work from the brilliant mind of Hidetaka Miyazaki. The studio’s revered president and creative director shared details about it in an exclusive chat with Eurogamer.

The story of Shadow of the Erdtree is based on a part of the original mythos created by George R.R. Martin for ELDEN RING, with no additions from the writer of Song of Ice and Fire. Miyazaki reveals that the first ideas for the expansion came after the development of the base game, incorporating elements that did not find their way into the original story but do fit as DLC.

ELDEN RING: Shadow of the Erdtree is our biggest expansion to date.

As for the size of the expansion, Miyazaki stresses that it is the largest expansion FromSoftware has worked on to date. The new campaign takes place in a brand new area of the map, larger and denser than the base game’s Necrolimbo. The design of the new map features greater depth and a fluid dungeon layout with large open environments. On the other hand, Miyazaki also previewed the presence of a poisonous swamp, a scenario he has been passionate about creating.

This time around, we wanted to go deeper and carry out a denser and richer level design, bringing these types of designs together in a more fluid way. There will, of course, be large open areas, there will, of course, be legacy dungeons, but we also experimented with something more in-between to offer a more diverse gameplay experience.

Shadow of the Erdtree offers more than ten new boss fights, new weapons, equipment and skills, including eight new weapon categories. In terms of difficulty, the creative assures that it resembles that of the base game, providing challenging confrontations with the freedom for players to decide how and when to tackle them, also confirming an intense combat on par with Malenia in the original story.

We wanted to deliver these challenging encounters and these imposing threats, and to achieve that, we wanted to give the player a lot of freedom of approach. We wanted them to feel free in how they choose and when they choose to face and tackle these difficulties. So players looking for that kind of challenge in our games will find an equal challenge in the DLC.

The ELDEN RING: Shadow of the Ertree expansion will be available on June 21 on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and will soon be available for purchase separately at €39.99 or as part of a bundle alongside the base game for €79.99. The expectation around it continues to grow, consolidating FromSoftware’s work as a title that will continue to captivate its fans.
