Despite its strong reviews, it is the most-watched Star Wars movie in history on Disney+ and now celebrates its 25th anniversary: The Phantom Menace.

Star Wars did not take long to become a saga that would mark an entire generation, with a first trilogy that catapulted it as one of the most important science fiction sagas in history. But it is also something that two decades later was repeated with the beginning of a trilogy consisting of three prequels that would tell the story of Darth Vader, also known as Anakin Skywalker.

Specifically, it was in May 1999 when LucasFilm released ‘Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace‘. With its premiere, a complete craze was experienced in movie theaters, similar to what we have subsequently seen with phenomena such as ‘The Avengers: Infinite War’ or ‘The Avengers: Endgame’. However, the film’s popularity seemed to falter at first, despite its great financial results ($431 million), although in time it has settled down so much that it has become the most-watched Star Wars film on Disney+ (via Variety).

‘The Phantom Menace’ is Disney+’s most-watched Star Wars film.

As mentioned, the film didn’t start off well in the eyes of fandom. At the end of the summer in which the film was released, almost everyone harshly criticized the excessive use of special effects, which left a too artificial image, the presence of a young Anakin (Jake Lloyd) that did not end up convincing and excite the fans, as well as the appearance of a comic character that has never managed to make up among the fans of the saga, as was Jar Jar Binks.

However, as is often the case, the passage of time has been much better for a movie that is now fondly remembered by Star Wars fans. In fact, despite the great “hostility” with which this type of debate is lived, some consider that the beginning of the new trilogy improved the original, although it is not the most established discourse. What is clear is that ‘The Phantom Menace’ has achieved a real milestone, becoming the most watched Star Wars movie on Disney+.
